According to MSNBC World News, Malawi courts have sentenced a gay couple to serve 14 years in prison because they are gay.

“Maximum sentences are intended for use for worst cases,” Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa Usiwa said as he delivered his sentence. “We are sitting here to represent the Malawi society which I do not believe is ready at this point in time to see its sons getting married to other sons or conducting engagement ceremonies.”

How do you judge when a country is “ready” for such things? What’s the criteria in place that would allow one to be able to determine whether you are ready to treat all humans equally?

Stewie Griffin: Well, you wanna know what I learned this week? Being a grown-up sucks. Women, Brian, what a royal pain in the ass. It’s like, it’s like why can’t you just hang out with guys, you know, just live with someone of your own sex, just do what you do with women, but with your buddy. You know wha, why don’t guys just do that?
Brian Griffin: They do. It’s called being gay.
Stewie Griffin: Oh, is that what gay is? Oh, yeah. I could totally get into that.

And now its officially out! According to TVSquad, Family Guy creator, Seth McFarlane, reveals to the errr… readers… of Playboy magazine that perpetually-one-year-old Stewie Griffin, the main cartoon character of the show, is gay. This reminds me of the post-HP reveal of Dumbledore’s deepest darkest secrets being revealed outside of canon. Fabulous, truly, but not headspinning.

Matthew Shutler writes a perspective piece on coming out of the closet. He tells his experience of the process of coming out and gives advise for those who are considering it.

I recently “came out of the closet” and, to my surprise, the world outside my little charade hasn’t changed much — except for a newly found happiness, of course. I made this decision a little after Christmas and I haven’t looked back since, but I have to admit that the decision itself was the most difficult one I’ve ever had to make. The pressure it presented and the unknown that waited on the other side wasn’t easy to set aside or overcome. However, coming out has made my life infinitely better, and other gay teenagers should know that they don’t have to live in an environment that forces them to keep their sexuality secret. I’m saying this in hopes that someone, somewhere will be helped by knowing that, because I understand the fear, pain and doubt that keeping this secret creates.
